3 Ways to Find Your Purpose When the World Feels Heavy

There’s something stirring in the air right now, a collective awakening among women in their 40s and 50s.

That faint tap on your shoulder, or sometimes not-so-gentle bop on the head life or career transition, letting you know it’s time for change.

Although the timing might seem crazy right now, given the state of world affairs (I’m looking at you, U.S.A.), this is precisely why there’s never been a more important moment to lean into that tapping.

The Reality We’re Facing

It’s true. The landscape before us is complex.

You’re navigating economic uncertainty, workplace upheaval, and social change that can feel overwhelming and terrifying. Corporate positions are becoming less stable, not that they were guaranteed anyway.

What’s so fascinating about this is, what we are seeing in real-time are old, outdated, broken systems cracking apart making way for new possibilities to emerge.

Real transformation doesn’t happen in comfort or safety.

The Midlife Awakening

Merely changing jobs or starting a business isn’t the issue. It’s much deeper than that.

It’s about recognizing that the script you’ve been given, the one you have dutifully followed that said success is ‘bringing home the bacon and frying it up in that pan’, might not be worth pursuing anymore.

And this isn’t just in your head.

Global studies from 2022-2024 of over 50,000 women reveal a consistent pattern: midlife women are leaving their companies not from lack of ambition, but because of systemic barriers that intensify with age.

Despite their proven expertise, they face diminished opportunities, increased discrimination at senior levels, and shoulder additional responsibilities that go unrecognized and unrewarded.

Proof positive, you’re not crazy for wanting more. You’re a part of something bigger.

The Signs Are Everywhere

– That meeting where another colleague leaves or is laid off and you’re left taking on their workload

– The Sunday night anxiety that’s becoming harder to ignore

– The tiny whisper that is starting to shout, “Is this really what I am supposed to be doing right now?”

Rather than signs you are failing or that your perimenopausal hormones are raging, they’re invitations to something more powerful…who you are actually called to be.

Moving Beyond Fear

With headlines screaming about economic instability, it might seem foolish to consider changes now.  Having started my own business right at the start of the 2008 Recession, I know a thing or two about that.

I was so eager to help people, I completely missed the memo about it being the “worst possible time” to start a business.

Thankfully, all these years later, I can honestly say I would do it all over again because staying in a corporate environment that was sucking my soul dry wasn’t a price I was willing to pay.

This is an opportunity for you to ask yourself:

What if staying put is actually riskier?

Creating Your Path Forward

Instead of letting fear paralyze you, let’s channel it into strategic action.

Here are 3 ways to find your purpose when the world feels heavy:

1. Start With Inner Work

– Journal about what truly lights you up

– Notice when you feel most alive and energized

– Pay attention to what makes you lose track of time

2. Build Your Foundation

– Create a financial cushion that gives you breathing room

– Develop skills that align with your vision

– Nurture relationships with others on similar journeys

3. Leverage Community

  • Find other midlife women who are questioning and reimagining their lives
  • Share your fears and dreams openly
  • Create connections that support your vision

These three pillars of focusing on innerwork, foundation building, and community support, form the bridge between who you are and who you’re ready to become.

Your Wisdom is Needed

There is no doubt that the world needs women like you right now. Women who’ve weathered storms, who understand nuance, who have depth of wisdom and experience, who lead with both strength and empathy.

Your experience is a gift that’s desperately needed in these complex times.

Taking the Next Step

You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t need to make dramatic changes overnight.

Start small:

– Have one conversation that scares you

– Take one class that interests you

– Make one connection outside your usual circle

Your purpose isn’t something you find, it’s what you release.

This is Urgent

Yes, the world feels uncertain. Yes, there are risks.

But one thing is true, there are always risks. The biggest risk you can take is letting your purpose slip away because fear spoke louder than courage.

Your next chapter is waiting to be lived, not considered. Despite all the uncertainty (or maybe because of it), this is your moment.

Trust that inner voice. Take that next step. Your future self will thank you for being brave enough to begin.

The world needs you — your gifts, your wisdom, and your courage — especially now.

Are you ready to answer the call?
